Looking Back to the Digital Society Conference 2

Digital Credentials and Identities - the time has come

On November 26, the Second Digital Society Conference (DSC2) took place at the ChangeHub in Berlin. On 27 November, a workshop on the topic of organizational identities took place as part of DSC2.

Just like last year, the DSC focused on the topic of digital proofs and identities. In keynote speeches, panels and interactive work sessions on 26.11.24, the genesis and framework conditions of the European digital identity solution and the EUDI wallet were explained and factual information was provided. We also explored the question of how this European solution fits into the international context and what we as a society can expect in the coming years. After all, the sovereign eID is just the beginning of a rapid and challenging development, as a result of which companies will also receive a digital ID to ensure the exchange of data and the security of entity identification.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the speakers, panellists and especially our sponsors, without whom we would not have been able to realize DSC2.

Workshops were held on the following topics:

  • Connecting municipalities and small businesses
  • Wiki data / organizational identities / definition
  • ID theft / fraud
  • Business models / payment integration
  • SDI initiatives outside the EU / interoperability
  • Killer applications for European wallet (EUDI wallet)
  • And then there was a work session under the tongue-in-cheek header “Dachshund Club”: Here, use cases and applications of digital identities that do not require a sovereign identity were discussed. For example, membership of the Dachshund Club. This may sound strange, but when you consider that more than 37% of the population of Germany is involved in clubs, this field of application seems very interesting for promoting the adaptation and use of wallets.

Finally, the Digital Identities and Verification Glossary (in German) was presented. This is the product of collaboration within the BMWK’s Secure Digital Identities (SDI) research projects and is now available for download. The aim of the guide is to provide a low-threshold introduction to the world of digital credentials. The terms wallet, digital identity, digital proof and signature are explained. The guide is free to use.

DSC2 – Workshop 27.11.24

On the second day of DSC2, a specialist workshop was held that was entirely dedicated to the topic of organizational identities (OrgID). First, the current state of affairs was presented by various speakers. This served as the basis for the subsequent work in two large specialist groups, the aim of which was to further specify the open questions and points on the topics of access, data exchange and technical design in particular.
